Adopters Home

Welcome to the SCALE-UP website. On these pages you will find information provided by institutions that have adopted the SCALE-UP approach to teaching and learning.

Click Browse all Adopters Pages to get started. The magnifying glass in the top right corner of the page searches for special keyword Tags, like “physics” or “chemistry” or “groups” or you can look for a particular word or phrase on the wiki pages.

To return here, you can either click on the word Adopters in the upper left of the page. More assistance is available on the Navigation Help page.

If you are a SCALE-UP adopter and have editing privileges, you will find instructions here. (If you need those capabilities, you will need to arrange that with Bob Beichner.)

If you want more detailed information or want to become a registered site member, contact Bob Beichner and ask to be registered. He will need to verify that you really are a faculty member, so be sure to include a web link or other means of verification in your e-mail. If you already are a member of the site, just click here to go to the Member’s Home Page.

There is a nice page called “How do I implement studio teaching?” at the Science Education Resource Center at Carleton College. It does a good job of describing the underlying philosophy of studio-style teaching.

Several institutions have jumped into this approach in a big way. Clemson probably has the largest number of courses taught via the SCALE-UP approach. As shown in the architectural rendering below, the University of Minnesota has a new building with twenty SCALE-UP classrooms, which can be combined into 10 larger Active Learning Classrooms. More than 1/3 of all Minnesota students had a class in one of the new rooms within a year of the building’s opening.

A new building at Florida Gulf Coast University has four SCALE-UP rooms for physics, biology, marine science, and chemistry.

At the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, a new engineering building with three SCALE-UP classrooms opened in December 2008.
