Philip Young, contact. The University of Wisconsin – Platteville has committed to a studio format for calculus- and algebra-based physics beginning in Fall 2009. Enrollments in the two semesters of these two courses total about 600 students. Three studio classrooms are included in a new engineering building. The department received an NSF-CCLI grant to purchase new equipment better suited to the studio format, prepare some instructional materials for interactive activities, and conduct assessment of the transition. All sections of the above courses will be held in the studio classrooms; however, instructors will have quite a bit of freedom in how they teach within the studio environment. One aspect of the grant is to evaluate the effectiveness of different teaching practices within the studio environment.
